Volunteer Activities by Individual Members

Hitachi High Technologies America's Community Action Program (Schaumburg)

Hitachi High Technologies America, Inc. (HTA), formerly Nissei Sangyo America, headquartered in Schaumburg, IL. formed a Community Action Committee (CAC), in 1996. The purpose of this committee has been to contribute support to our local communities. Employees have found satisfaction and pride in being able to assist the greater Chicago-area community through providing financial, volunteer, and matching contributions to people and organizations in need. They have dedicated time and energy to identify local causes and follow-up with support in many ways.

Some of the ways the HTA CAC assists the community is through cash grants and matching funds, volunteerism, walking, running, and biking in support of fundraising activities. Specifically, some of the local organizations the HTA CAC has supported include: Canine Companions for Independence, the Emily Dorfman Foundation for Children, Marklund's Children's Home, Special Olympics of Illinois, The Bridge Youth and Family Services, the Township of Schaumburg Food Pantry, the National MS Society - Illinois Chapter, The Mulliganeers, Inc, P.A.D.S. of Elgin, People's Resource Center, Schaumburg Police Department, Western DuPage Special Recreation Association Foundation, American Disabled Equipment Fund, Lamb's Farm, and others.

HTA's CAC feels very fortunate to be supported by the Hitachi Foundation, who helps guide our group through education, motivation, and matching funds. Through the advent of the Hitachi Foundation, formed in 1987, the philosophy of The Foundation was to encourage formation of teams of Hitachi corporate employees throughout North America, to identify needs within their respective communities, and respond.

The Hitachi Foundation holds annual conferences which focus on peer learning sessions to address relevant challenges; guest speakers who review cutting-edge issues in the field of corporate citizenship; and skill-building activities to strengthen the effectiveness of each of our CACs. Monthly conference calls are open to all Community Action Committees and focus on common issues geared to strengthen CAC practices. These calls serve as an organizing mechanism for North American collaborative efforts, and provide an on-going opportunity to surface new ideas and address challenges. The Foundation offers a matching funds program, known as Hitachi Community Action Partnership (HCAP) that provides matching funds which bolster Hitachi High Technologies America's corporate donations, and employee volunteerism.

The Hitachi Foundation sponsors two drives annually, and the HTA CAC actively participates in both of them including food and blood drives. These drives are very beneficial to the communities of all CACs within North America. This year, Hitachi High Technologies America raised almost 5,000 pounds of food (1,200 pounds in Chicago), which was delivered to local community organizations to provide pantry services to the hungry.

Our CAC strengthens its ability to assist the community by encouraging employees to participate in our cause through volunteering, participating in the companyfs internal fund-raising activities, and taking part in our annual food and blood drives. Participation has been encouraged by CAC promotion efforts that have included such activities as hosting recipient organizations that explained how the support is used, kicking off a fundraiser with a "make-your-own ice cream sundae," or a "doughnuts and coffee cake" breakfast, and posting related on-going communications.

Hitachi High Technologies America takes seriously a responsibility to strive to build a prosperous community, contributing as a solid corporate citizen with passion and pride in our work. We are honored to be able to support the communities in which we live and work. The members of our company's Community Action Committee consider it a privilege to lead the efforts to help give back to the local community through financial, volunteer and in-kind contributions.
