Survey Results

Method:
A bilingual (English/Japanese) survey form was mailed out to all 354 JCCC corporate members during March-April 2004.

Abstract:
  1. The survey results show that 73 JCCC corporate members - 68.2% of those that responded - are engaged in 292 types of community giving activities, depending on their company size and degree of involvement in the respective community. Of these 73 companies, 40 are active in philanthropy both at the corporate and the individual employee level.


  2. Results show that 14 companies have a foundation or community giving program that funds Chicago-area schools and/or nonprofit organizations. There are 24 member companies that have continued community giving efforts over the last 3 years, and 13 that have a deep relationship with one particular local school or non-profit organization to which they contribute the bulk of their giving and/or volunteer efforts.


  3. These results show that 67 companies conduct some kind of corporate-related contributions, while 47 strongly encourage employee-related contributions.

Survey Results (details):

  First, the survey asked about the methods most commonly used in the companiesf community giving programs. When asked whether their company had a foundation or community giving program that funds Chicago-area schools and/or non-profit organizations, 14 firms answered gyes.h Results also show that 21 companies have their headquarters outside of the Chicago area, and their HQ has a foundation or community-giving program. For 47 companies, either North America headquarters and/or Japanese headquarters must approve the budget and/or funding for their local giving program.

  The responses to the questions regarding the contents of the community-giving program in the past three years are as follows. 67 companies, or 62.6% of those who answered the survey, said they are currently engaged in a community-giving program at the company level. 47 companies also encourage their employees to participate in community giving activities on the individual level. Moreover, there were 22 companies whose headquarters in the greater Chicago area have funded American schools/non-profit organizations located outside of the area.

  Furthermore, there were 24 companies that have been continuously giving to the community for more than 3 years. In addition, 13 companies have a deep relationship with one particular local school or non-profit organization to which they contribute the bulk of their giving and/or volunteer efforts. The top three questions in each category that were most frequently answered affirmative were:

#1 My company has donated used or unwanted items such as computers, office furniture or office supplies to local schools or non-profit organizations.(38 out of 67 companies; 56.7%)
#2 My company has sponsored a local school or non-profit fund raising event (e.g. by buying tables, raffle tickets, etc.). (25 out of 67; 37.3%)
#3 My company has donated goods or services to local fundraising events and/or auctions (24 of 67 companies, or 35.8%)

Ranking within the Employee Related Contributions Category
#1 My company has coordinated a "Toys for Tots" or other holiday-related giving program that encourages employees and/or customers to donate items. (25 companies, 53.2% of 47 total)
#2 My company has coordinated food drives that encourage employees and/or customers to donate items. (20 companies, or 42.6% of 47 total)
#2 My company has coordinated blood drives that encourage employee and/or customers to participate. (20 companies, or 42.6%)
#2 My company has provided matching contributions to schools/non-profit organizations that employees donate to. (20companies, 42.6%)

  The survey results also shows that during the three-year period as many as four companies sponsored more than 10 types of philanthropic efforts on either the corporate or employee level. Moreover, 73 companies (68.2% of all that responded, 20.6% of all Active JCCC Members) answered affirmative to 292 questions.

  The JCCC corporate members have clearly continued their philanthropy efforts long after the 9/11 terrorist attack three years ago, in direct proportion to their business size and the closeness of their association with the local community. Examples of corporate-related contributions commonly practiced among JCCC members are as follows:
  • Donating to local YMCA, American Cancer Society, etc.
  • Participating in community-giving activities through Local Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry
  • Sponsoring programs that bring local high school students to Japan and other special programs
  • Conducting tours of Japanese educators to the local grade schools
  • Contributing to non-profit organizations in medicine, education and culture from across the U.S.
  • Sponsoring employee-run volunteer programs e.g. for disabled youth
  • Coordinating blood drives, park sweeps, etc. that encourage company employees and/or customers to participate in
