Agency Mission The mission of the Association House is to serve as a resource of the Greater West Town Community that promotes the growth and development of individuals, families, and neighborhoods. We provide quality social services to a multicultural, predominantly Latino community. We foster community development and leadership through education, advocacy, and collaboration with other agencies. We offer social, cultural, and recreational activities for people of all ages.
Project Overview The acronym LISTO stands for Learning, Interaction, Scholarship, and Teamwork Opportunities; in Spanish, listo connotes resourcefulness in response to problems. Youth programs have been a priority at the Association House since its founding in 1899. Each year the LISTO After School Program serves nearly 100 disadvantaged elementary school age children and their families who live in the ethnically diverse West Town, Humboldt Park, Avondale, Hermosa, and Logan Square communities.
Project Purpose Structured educational, social, and athletic activities serve as an early intervention initiative and as violence, substance abuse, and dropout prevention. Such an initiative is crucial in a community with high levels of gang activity and violence, as well as public school dropout rates as high as 75%. Areas targeted for training include: study habits, leadership, teamwork, personal accountability, community awareness, and service. Focus is on increasing self-esteem and involving parents and local schools in participants' development. The After School Program is continuously open throughout the school year, on each and every day that public school is in session.
