Harvest Festival Programs for Students

Every October, The Field Museum hosts a month-long Harvest Festival in celebration of autumn. This year’s Harvest Festival, entitled Field of Screams, featured programs that appealed to the Museum’s diverse audiences. Because the Museum believes that the arts serve as a powerful educational tool, these programs were richly infused with performances, hands-on arts activities and workshops, and storytelling. This year, the Museum hosted a special set of educational programs developed specifically for students.

Museums are unique in their ability to provide object-based learning experiences. The Field Museum is a treasure trove of cultural artifacts and scientific specimens that pique curiosity and that foster exploration. During Field of Screams activities, students drew inspiration from the man-eating Lions of Tsavo for their stories, and the Museum’s varied cast of animal specimens, past and present, served as suspects in the murder-mystery. Student and teacher reviews of the activities were positive—students loved learning through fun activities, while teachers were delighted that their students acquired skills that they could apply to most school subject areas.
