The Proviso East High School Oral History Project, an interdisciplinary school-community collaboration, records the memories of elderly African American community residents whose life experiences include the time when racial segregation was an acceptable, legal way of life. Students from three interdisciplinary classes - American History, Radio and Television Production, and Development of Western Thought - will collect first hand testimony and develop a multimedia living-history archive including a written and video documentary, an interactive web site, and a link with a local history museum. The goal of the project is to make learning more meaningful through personal contact with these elderly community members and to illuminate the subject of segregation while honoring the lives of those forced to live through it.
